  1. I have to do the posting of the apps in 2 parts (too many characters)

    Blog for Apps

Auscultation Primer app is free to users. It is available for iPhones and Android devices. It offers auscultation of numerous heart sounds as they relate to the anatomy, physiology, and diagnosis of CVD. It's perfect for physicians, medical students, nurses, student nurses, and other clinicians wishing to improve their auscultation skills. The app includes ten cases of real patient recordings among which are some of the most common sounds and murmurs. Each video recording includes the ability to watch and listen by using audio plus, a phonocardiogram, and ekg tracing for timing. Additionally, descriptive text is provided to assist in the learning experience.
This could be used in the classroom as the cardiac system is being taught or the clinical setting for pre-post conference. I think that it is important for students to hear “text book” sounds first from simulators just to have a solid foundation of the actual sound. The real patient sounds are normally not text book and require some amount of clinical reasoning for interpretation. This is a great way for students to hear sounds they might not have a chance to hear during their education. It gives the student and professor a teaching moment to discuss the pathophysiology of the sounds.

Med Mnemonics (Android, iOS) This app can be used on iPhone and Android devices. Nursing school requires the ability to memorize terminology and other information. This app suggests mnemonics to retain information regarding pharmacology. Pharmacology is a class that requires memorizing a large amount of information. Mnemonics is a strategy that helps make learning unique and unforgettable. It can consist of word-play, phrases, or funny pictures or sayings.
This can be used in the classroom and it would be interesting to have students create some of their own mnemonics. When information is presented in non-traditional ways, ways that students can relate to, they are more likely to retain the information. I have frequently had students tell me, “Professor Swim, I will never forget the silly little things you taught me to understand and remember important information.”

  2. Swim: Apps for nursing students Part 2

NCLEX RN Mastery 2015 is a nursing study app available for iPhones and Android devices. This app is available in RN and PN formats. The creators market the app as the most important study guide for the most important test of your career, the NCLEX. They suggest that the exam taker will pass taking 75 questions. The full version covers 1,700 NCLEX questions with rationale and illustrations, 350 pharmacology questions, test/study strategies, test statistics, quizzes, mnemonics, and a per-question timer. It also has the capability to trend weak and strong areas of content for the individual. The full comprehensive version is available to purchase for $29.99, however there is a free 100 question trial version (medical/surgical only). The comprehensive version has a money-back guarantee of 200% if you are not successful on the NCLEX. apps are single iOS universal app that has a different interface for the iPhone and iPad. - See more at: http://www.nclexmastery.com/
There are free apps available for NCLEX questions as well, although the number of questions is limited. This could be used in the classroom with small groups and individual study. The mobility of the questions is valuable. Cost may be an issue. Anytime you can model critical thinking and reasoning to your students, you help them in their thought process. Answering NCLEX questions in class with the students provides them with a glimpse of you and your critical thinking. They also see you breaking down the question, finding the stem and eliminating the distractors. This is also a great exercise for Socratic questioning as the students are processing the information.

Nursing Central markets itself as an “all-in-one clinical solution for nurses.” This mobile app is available in iPhone and Android devises. It is a complete mobile solution for nurses and students to look up detailed information on diseases, tests, and procedures. Nursing Central has the ability to consult comprehensive databases of over 5,000 drugs or refer to more than 65,000 terms. The following recourses are available through Nursing Central: Davis’s Drug Guide, Taber’s Medical Dictionary, Davis’s Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests, Diseases and Disorders, nursing journals, and MEDLINE. Dosage calculation problems with calculators are available on this site. This app has a free version that allows the user to sample all features during a limited time. The full version is quite pricey, at $169.99 for a year subscription. It offers real-time updates.
This is also an excellent app for clinical settings and pre and post conf. Being able to access information about a disease process, treatments, labs, medications… on the smallest device the students have right at hand, their phone, is time effective, saves them from carrying books and bags to a clinical setting that has no place for students to store their bags and books is ingenious. The “old-school” thought on students having their phones has to be resolved; it is an antiquated thought process that limits real-time learning opportunities. Cost could be an issue.

  3. Remind App Created for my CCU students:

    https://www.remind.com/classes/4704ccu

The technology I chose to utilize in my Critical Care course was the Remind app, which can be found in iTunes and the Google Play store. One distinct advantage of utilizing this app for my class is the anonymity of using it. Faculty and students alike do not have to exchange personal information such as phone numbers because the app provides communication. Another advantage to using this app in place of phone numbers or emails, is that it allows for push notifications in real time. Adjustments to meeting times or places sometimes need to take place, and, depending on the size of the class, this can be a daunting task for the instructor to ensure that each student knows of the amendments. The instructor would have to take a valuable amount of texting each student individually, and not everyone may check their email, essentially making this method unreliable. This app will send a notification to each student allowing for immediate receipt of the changes. Teaching methods will continue to change with the emergence of new technology. For now, cell phones and data seem to be a staple in most everyone’s life, providing a great opportunity for communication between faculty and students.

Please let me know if you would like additional information! I can add you to my classlist so you can check it out.

  4. Apps-
NCSBN Medication Flashcards- this app is by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and is a method to study pharmacology related subjects. This offers descriptions and examples of thousands of drugs for the students to study in preparation for NCLEX. The app has interactive features that the student chooses based on their knowledge of the drug. They can “flag-it” meaning that they need to continue to review that medication or they can choose the “got-it” option meaning they have mastered the concept of the med. The students could use this for study while they are in the pharmacology course, throughout their other courses, and then when studying for NCLEX at the end of their educational journey. Another reason it is great for nursing students is that it is free.

Quizlet- this app is a testing app that has sets of quizzes that are flashcard-based. These quizzes are pre-built for nursing topics that would be beneficial for nursing students. The student could go on as a guest and use the quizzes or log in with a Google or Facebook account. This can be used on the iPhone or iPad. Another app like Quizlet is Flashcards by Brainscape. This app runs on ads which can be removed for a fee of $2.99.

Smart Medical Reference- this app is a reference for several different areas that could be used throughout the nursing program while students, but then is still useful after school when the student moves into practice. The app has medical calculators, a drug guide, a reference for lab values, a reference for tests and procedures, medical terminology, and also includes access to PubMed. The app also includes a Spanish dictionary and an English to Spanish translator that has common medical words. There is a free version of the app that contains advertising and does not include access to some premium content areas, but with an affordable price of $5.99 the student can get rid of the ads and gain access to the premium content. This app can be used on the iPhone or the iPad.

NCLEX Mastery- this nursing study app for the NCLEX is available in RN or PN versions. This app has a free version that is med/surg oriented that could be tried out prior to purchasing the full version for $29.99. The full version has 1600 NCLEX questions with illustrations and 350 pharmacology questions. The app features practice questions, strategies for testing and studying, test statistics and a timer. The app offers a 200% money back guarantee if the student fails the NCLEX. This app can be used on the iPhone or the iPad.

  5. The 4 apps I found were all located on the website http://www.learning nurse.org/index.php/assessment/apps. This website has a plethora of nursing educational apps that can be downloaded to any of the mobile devices using iTunes via iPhone, iPad, Amazon Kindle, or Google Play for android phones and tablets. I looked at 4 apps on this site that all offer students to quiz their knowledge on pathophysiology. The four apps I viewed were 1) Learning Cardiology Quiz app, 2) Learning Pulmonary Quiz app, 3) Learning Gastroenterology Quiz app, and 4) Learning Neurology Quiz app. Each app cost $1.99 to download to iTunes to become available for use. I went in and did the quiz for Learning Cardiology and found it to be fun and challenging. I believe this would be worth the cost for students to have access to for reviewing their pathophysiology related to these concepts. I particularly like them because I teach critical care and the students need to know this information!

  9. Well I posted the apps blog within my blog...ha. My mistake. Here are the apps I blogged about.

    Apps:

The following apps are what I chose to utilize in a nursing education program. Some of these do have a cost associated with them and the rationale for these costs is the student has the option to buy an app or buy a book/online program. The student has to pay whichever they choice they make.

    Mosby's Nursing Consult (free)
Mosby's nursing consult is a useful app for nursing students since the app is a quick brief consult useful at the bedside. The app includes drug monographs for generic or name brand drugs, drug calculators, patient education including conditions and treatment, medications, and ED discharge instructions. The other aspect is evidence based nursing monographs (EBN) for many different illnesses. The information is in the nursing process format and provides an easily applied assessment with interventions. There is a data analysis within the EBN section for each illness and the discharge planning is provided. For a free app that is helpful to students and is immediately applicable to the clinical setting and can be used in the classroom this is my top choice for students. I plan to do an activity during a lecture using this app for a future class.

NCLEX RN National Council Licensure ($13.99)
This app is useful to nursing students as they prepare to take the NCLEX. I would recommend this for senior students or last semester students in an ADN program. The app is set up based on the NCLEX content such as safe and effective care, environment management of care (17-23%), safety and infection control (9-15%), health promotion and maintenance (6-12%), psychological integrity (6-12%), physiological integrity, basic care and comfort (6-12%), pharmocological and parenteral therapies, reduction of risk potential (9-15%), and physiological adaptation (11-17%). I recommend this app as a practice tool for students but not to eliminate an actual NCLEX prep course of some sort.

    Nursing IQ (free)
Nursing IQ is a game and it is free. This is a fun and useful app that I could see students using for content and quizzing. The game has levels and the user cannot progress through the level unless the level is passed. The game provides quizzes and each question is timed so the user cannot spend too much time on each question. The downside is if the user is not successful and tries to pass the level again-the questions are the same but the student must master them before advancing. The questions are not specific to any certain section of nursing such as pediatric or med/surg, the questions are general. I think this is a fun game and the student can learn from the game. Also, there must be some fun incorporated into nursing, right?! :-)

Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses ($38.99)
The Davis's Drug Guide for nurses app is one of my favorite apps. I utilize the Davis drug guide app and I have used it for several years now. The app has come in handy on many occasions. This is one of the apps that is also a requirement in most nursing programs either in a book version or an app. I prefer the app because it is always with me and any updates will be automatically updated. The book version gets outdated pretty quickly with the changing of medications and side effects. This app would be a highly recommended purchase for the students and since they usually carry their phones with them all the time it is useful and handy.

Utilizing technology within nursing education is necessary and can be a useful tool in providing education. These apps and the video are a few examples of incorporating technology in the classroom. Students will be happy that they can utilize their beloved smart phones to learn about nursing.
